This is a mere outline of what we intend for an introduction of Malcolm Wells on our website. For Mac played a role—no, actually we must say roles—without which neither the physical message of Raven Rocks, its community experience, nor its sense of the times could have been the same. Those of us whose desires and dreams gave birth to the Raven Rocks experiment and projects could not imagine life here without Mac. At least life here as we know it, love it, thrive on it, has Mac written all over its every page. Although not a member, this architect, artist, author, and keen observer with a gentle heart was generously and creatively involved—all through the force of deep conviction and a capacity for commitment.

In 2002 we asked Mac for some biographical information for our first website. We did it knowing that he was very busy. (Among many other things, working on a book about Raven Rocks, no less!). So very typically, we had his response within hours. He probably expected we would type it, as everything he wrote was done in his own hand. But besides being a wonderful designer and architect, Mac was a cartoonist, illustrator and, above all, a master of another art that affects all the rest—the art of gentle humor. And so, we wondered, why not include the letter itself, the whole thing? Nothing else would convey the message better.
